<벽 너머를 보기> 2014. 망원경, 삼각대, 창문, QR코드, 오디오가이드, 가변크기
이 작품은 갤러리의 안과 밖에 대한 작업이다. 갤러리 안에 있는 사람들은 설치된 망원경을 통해 갤러리에 있는 창문 밖을 응시할 수 있다. 망원경 속에는 QR코드가 설치된 벽이 보이는데, 그 QR코드를 통해 다른 관객들은 갤러리 안에 있는 상황에 대한 안내를 받는다.
이를 통해 갤러리 안에 있는 사람들은 전시장 바깥에 있는 사람들이 QR코드에서 나오는 오디오 가이드를 듣는 것이 이 작품의 의미를 만드는 것이라고 생각을 하고, 그 오디오에 이 작품에 자세한 설명이 있을 것이라고 기대한다.
한편 갤러리 밖에 있는 사람들은 QR코드를 통해 재생되는 오디오 가이드를 들으며 전시장 안에 있는 관객이 자신을 지켜보고 있는 것에 이 작품의 의미가 있을 거라며 기대한다. 이 작품에 참여하는 모든 이들은 다른 사람들한테 작품의 의미를 만들어낼 책임을 계속해서 미루고 있을 뿐이다.
이 작품엔 작품, 관객, 작가, 전시공간, 관객의 참여, 감상 행위 등의 다양한 요소들이 배치되어 있지만 실제로 의미라고 부를만한 것은 빠져 있다. 사실 작품의 껍데기만 남아 있는 상태이지만, 아무도 진짜 작품의 의미가 무엇인지는 알지 못한다.
Watching Beyond the Wall, 2014. Scope, Tripod, Window, QR Code, Audio Guide, Dimension Variable
This work is about the inside and outside of the gallery space. People inside are watching people outside through the installed telescope. they can see the people listening to the audio guide via QR code posted on the billboard outside of the gallery. However people outside are listening to the introduction of the situation about inside of the gallery.
In this process, Indoor people are expecting for the outside people to figure out the meaning of this performance art. Because they think the message of this artwork would be found in the audio guide.
However, the message of the audio guide is not. It is just describe of this situation. They only can know about someone watching themselves inside of the gallery. So they expect that the inside people knows the meaning of this artwork. Every people who is participating this art work are tossing the responsibility for making meaning or value to each others continuously.
In this work, there are an artwork, spectators, inside and outside of gallery space, participating, performance, appreciating but there is no genuine meaning of this work: that could be the real meaning of this work as well. There is an only the surface of conditions about art work but nobody can figure out what is the truth of this work.
